Late Dr. M.V. Shetty, MS, FRCS, FRFPS, was a distinguished figure known for his exceptional contributions across multiple domains. His professional excellence in surgery, coupled with a deep involvement in rehabilitation, set a remarkable precedent. Dr. Shetty assumed leadership roles in the state-run institution of Home Guards and worked as a dedicated surgeon at the first private Surgical Specialty Hospital in Dakshina Kannada District. As a Distinguished Professor of Surgery at KMC, Honorary Medical Officer at Government Wenlock Hospital, Director of the Lions Limb Centre, and Commandant of the D.K. Home Guards, he left an indelible mark on the healthcare and community service sectors. Dr. Shetty’s profound dedication and humane approach garnered respect from patients, colleagues, fellow doctors, students, and the general public. Beyond his medical prowess, he was known for his love of music and proficiency in playing the tabla, and his warm, understanding demeanor endeared him to students and peers alike. His legacy continues to inspire and uplift the fields he touched.
Dr. M. V. Shetty Memorial Trust was established by Dr. M. Ramgopal Shetty, who served as the Secretary and Executive Officer of the Trust. Dr. M.R. Shetty was a prominent figure closely associated with academic institutions such as Mangalore University and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences from their early days. He contributed significantly to the vocationalization of courses, particularly in the allied medical field within the framework of university education. Through the Trust, he played a pivotal role in introducing various vocational courses in fields like Nursing, Physiotherapy, Speech and Hearing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Social Work, and Education under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, and Mangalore University.
Dr. Shetty’s educational journey began at St. Aloysius High School in Mangalore. He completed his graduate and postgraduate professional education at Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore. Subsequently, he pursued a vascular surgery fellowship in the UK. Upon returning from the UK, he served as an Assistant Professor in Surgery at Kasturba Medical College. He continued his dedicated work there until 1989. Notably, his specialized surgical unit in Peripheral Vascular Surgery at Government Wenlock Hospital is still operational, providing affordable specialized surgical care to the underprivileged.
The Trust, under Dr. Shetty’s guidance, manages 19 diverse graduate, postgraduate, and diploma courses across nine affiliated colleges with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, and Mangalore University, Mangaluru. Furthermore, the Trust contributes to the community by operating the Blood Bank at Government Wenlock Hospital, clinical facilities in Physiotherapy and the Medical Laboratory at Government Lady Goschen Hospital. These facilities operate around the clock and provide free services to patients in need. Similarly, the clinical facilities of Physiotherapy and Speech and Hearing are also provided free of cost at Dr. M.V. Shetty Hospital.
Dr. Shetty’s founding vision was inspired by his father’s work at both the professional and community levels. It not only aimed at delivering quality healthcare services and training professionals in various allied medical fields but also at educating the public and offering affordable diagnostic and therapeutic services in collaboration with the government, particularly for those in need. His contributions have been instrumental in transforming the paramedical landscape in Karnataka and across the nation.
In 1985, Dr. M. Ram Gopal Shetty, our founder, embarked on a mission that was inspired by the illustrious Dr. M. Venugopal Shetty, his father. This journey began with a vision to create an institution that would not only provide top-notch education but also make a meaningful impact on society.
